One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most about commercial underwriting is that every submission tells a story.

At first glance, two businesses in the same industry may appear nearly identical. They may have similar revenues, operations, and requested limits. But once you begin asking questions, important differences often emerge.

How long has the business been operating?

What safety procedures are in place?

How experienced is management?

What lessons have been learned from prior losses?

These details often paint a much clearer picture than an application alone.

I’ve found that the strongest underwriting decisions are rarely based on a single number or document. They’re built through thoughtful analysis, attention to detail, and a willingness to understand the business behind the submission.

That mindset extends beyond underwriting itself. I enjoy learning about how different industries operate because it helps me better understand the risks they face. Whether it’s construction, manufacturing, healthcare, or hospitality, each business presents unique challenges that require curiosity as much as technical knowledge.

As the insurance industry continues to evolve—with advances in technology, changing regulations, and emerging risks—I believe curiosity will become even more valuable. Technical skills can be taught, but the habit of asking thoughtful questions and continuously learning is what allows professionals to adapt throughout their careers.

For me, underwriting isn’t simply about evaluating applications. It’s about understanding businesses, identifying exposures, and making informed decisions that balance opportunity with risk. That process begins with curiosity.
