Artificial intelligence will not replace underwriters, but it will significantly change how they work.
Many repetitive administrative tasks—summarizing submissions, extracting information from applications, organizing documentation, and identifying missing information—can already be assisted by AI.
This allows underwriters to spend more time where they create the greatest value: evaluating risk quality, understanding a client’s operations, recognizing patterns, and making informed underwriting decisions.
Commercial underwriting has always relied on judgment. AI strengthens that judgment by helping professionals process information more efficiently—not by replacing their expertise.
As someone who has been actively studying AI while continuing my career in commercial insurance, I believe the future belongs to underwriters who combine strong technical insurance knowledge with an understanding of emerging technology.
The most valuable underwriters won’t simply know how to evaluate risk—they’ll know how to leverage technology to make better decisions, communicate more effectively, and deliver greater value to brokers and clients.
